Description
Using acrylics on cartolino, I depicted the body of a flower(stamen) that at the same time can be seen as the body of a butterfly. There’s great detail to it. A magical powerful flower on the top left, is adding to this bright, peculiar atmosphere.
Propylaea is an artwork made in the painting circle of the village Profylia, on Rhodes island, Greece. As a participant suggested, the name of the village in older times was Propylaea, signifying a portal to the South of the island. I got excited by the idea and I named my piece after it.
That workshop was amongst those that happened in the most organic way: during the short walk from the central square of the village to the place where I’ve chosen for our art circle to happen, people would join us, adding up to the company, old women, kids, middle aged men…in a sense, it was the workshop with the greater variety of ages, genders, backgrounds..
I loved it. We enjoyed it and I kind of overstayed a little. That resulted in me cycling through the night to the next village, but I didn’t mind it. It was totally worth it.
The materials used are acrylic paint on cartolino.
The item is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, signed by me.

Here in this video I made using my personal video recordings, you can get a little taste from that project:
The project NOA was about painting circles in nature, one circle in every village of the island I was born and I grew up, Rhodes. It took me 2 and a half months to complete, as I was cycling with my bicycle from one village to the next, offering art workshops to the locals of all ages.
All of the 44 artworks, along with the video and the materials and tools used in the workshops, were exhibited in an art show in the historical building of the French Consultant on Rhodes, Greece, in August 2022.
